It is a tropical epiphytic orchid found at elevations of 1000 to 2000 meters in the Assam, eastern Himalayas, Sikkim, Myanamar, Laos and Vietnam. It has a woody rhizome with 6 cm to 9 cm between each ovate pseudobulbs carrying a single thick leaf. It blooms around October (in Thailand) on a basal, stout, 2 cm long inflorescence with broadly tubular, imbricate sheaths and oblong-ovate to lanceolate, acute floral bracts all carrying 4 to 10+ ephemeral flowers.Usually the flowers have brown dots on yellow background but some plants have almost golden yellow flowers with sparse fine dots or even none of them. The flowers have light fragrance of ripe banana.
It grows well at low altitude at sea level and in hot and humid weather of the southern Thailand. It is a rare species without any attractive feature, thus, no hybrid has been produced from this species.
